There are 2 big reasons why you need to know more about award-winning Belgian actress Deborah Francois... First, she's the star of three highly-acclaimed movies - Cannes big winner, the Dardenne Brothers' The Child (L'Enfant), the dramatic-thriller The Page Turner (La Tourneuse de pages) and the recent Sundance favorite and François’ first English-speaking film — Unmade Beds, by Argentine director-writer Alexis Dos Santos.

The movie has earned critical acclaim after screening at the recent Sundance festival. “Unmade Beds” uses an unconventional format, mixing still photography, live action and musical performances from underground British bands such as (We Are) Performance, Connan Mockasin and Plaster of Paris to narrate the intersecting lives of a group of young bohemians in a London loft.

Second, she's one award-winning actress with such intensity and dedication to her craft, you need to watch her perform and add the fact that she's simply beautiful with such a refreshing personality.

Described as the New Ingenue, Marcy Medina has written a profile of the actress and her initial foray into movies:

Since being discovered at 16, at an open casting call for “L’Enfant,” François has been launched headfirst into a string of French films.  Says Deborah: “My life changed completely. Before ‘L’Enfant,’ I thought, I’m this lucky girl who is going to make a movie, but that’s going to be the only movie I’ll ever make,” she recalls. “I had never even been to Paris before and all of a sudden I’m around the world with festivals. It was very different from high school.”

Here's a great review on Francois performance in The Page Turner, definitely my favorite from her.

The Page Turner: A Sensational Performance- Says Peter Bradshaw at the Guardian-

If anyone's considering a remake of Polanski's Repulsion, and looking for someone to play the Catherine Deneuve role - well, call off the search. Nineteen-year-old Déborah François can be the only candidate. Having given a tremendous, understated performance in the Dardennes brothers' award-winning realist drama L'Enfant, she is now sensational as the sociopathic blonde in this deliciously elegant and very French psychological thriller, written and directed by Denis Dercourt.

Running at just over 80 minutes, it is a meticulously controlled piece from which every ounce of fat has been trimmed. The tense interplay of emotions is exerted through glances and gestures; the violence beneath is merely hinted at, and finds overt expression just once, in which the stiletto-point of a cello stand is used with shocking malevolence.

Acclaim as an Actress:
While she maybe Belgian, the Cezar, the award-giving body in France which recognized the best in cinema has been giving her recognition - Francois has been nominated two years in a row for Most Promising Actress for her striking performances in "The Child" and The Page Turner." and has won the Joseph Plateau Award for Best Belgian Actress for her role in The Child (L'Enfant).

The Last Word: Says the actress: Before ‘L’Enfant,’ I thought, I’m this lucky girl who is going to make a movie, but that’s going to be the only movie I’ll ever make,”

She's definitely wrong on that one!
