Tanner Hall is a "vivid peek into the private world of an all-girls boarding school. In a cozy, but run down New England town, the knot of adolescent complexity is unravelled through the coming of age stories of four teen-age girls."

The NY Times' The Moment wrote a very interesting piece that offers more than a background of the filmmakers and the direction they decided to take to come up with this coming-of-age film:

"Tanner Hall" is the first feature film by Tatiana Von Furstenberg, the daughter of the fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg, and Francesca Gregorini, the daughter of Barbara Bach and stepdaughter of Ringo Starr. The two women, who became close friends while attending Brown University, wrote and directed the coming-of-age story about a group of friends at a New England all-girls school.

Von Furstenberg and Gregorini knew instinctively that making a style-conscious movie about girls was a slippery slope that can lead straight to Hannah Montana. "We noticed that a lot of movies about adolescence tend to be very materialistic," Von Furstenberg says. "And trendy," Gregorini adds. "A lot of cellphones."

Instead, the directors say they went for timelessness, visually and thematically - something more like "Little Darlings" and less like "Sex and the City" meets "The Facts of Life." The film was shot in Rhode Island, in locations that included a private men's club and a boys' school, and revolves around the complex relationships between four young women: Fernanda (Rooney Mara), who falls for a married man off campus; Kate (Brie Larson), an innocent flirt who doesn't understand her own power; Lucasta (Amy Ferguson), a tomboy coming to terms with her sexuality; and the manipulative Victoria (Georgia King), whose cruelty to the other girls masks a damaged soul. ScreenTerrier puts the spotlight on Georgia King:

Look out from young Brit Georgia King in stunning new coming-of-age film Tanner Hall which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

Georgia's route into acting was, by some measures, unorthodox. Although performance is in her blood (her father Jonathan Hyde is an actor, her mother Isobel Buchanan an opera singer and her sister, another actor, is RADA trained), she did not go to stage school, and her first role, at age nineteen, coincided with the change of direction many people undertake around that age. Some go to uni; Georgia went for a four-part BBC serial. [ read more ]

Georgia King made her professional debut in Jane Eyre. She was nearly unable to play the role, however. "A week before...the day [she began filming, King] felt stomach pains, then had her appendix rupture.... Her agent [told the producers] that she was unlikely to recover from the operation to remove it for at least ten days." Another actress was cast, but King recovered in time and was able to get the required medical clearance to film.
