British filmmaker Danny Boyle is reported to be very frustrated with his dealings with the child actors he cast in his Oscar winning film, Slumdog Millionaire.

Daily Record reported that:

"He is tired, really tired, the demands are now skyrocketing," Jai Ho Trust spokesman Noshir Dadrawalla said. The spokesman added: "Danny is tired, Danny is frustrated at these demands and has left for England. He is very, very upset."

The charity revealed that the young actors and their families had issued a series of demands they expected Boyle, who made his name with Trainspotting, to meet. During the meetings, Boyle was asked to provide a car for Azharuddin Ismail, who played the title character as a young boy. And co-star Rubina Ali wants a further £30,000 to add to the £50,000 her family has already been given for an apartment. Both actors are also reported to be demanding £35,000 of health insurance for their entire families. [ read more ]

I don't know about you, but it seems to me these young actors are getting some advice. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen but then again, it might be difficult to understand but we have to remember they are very poor (they actually live in slums) and to get something more from a movie which has earned $377,417,293 worldwide seems like the right thing to do. The demands were supposedly for health insurance for their families, is that too bad?

Last May, it was reported that the home of one of the child actors, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, was destroyed by Mumbai authorities. WsWs.Org reported the incident:

Civil authorities in Mumbai, India have torn down the home of Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, the 10-year-old boy from Mumbai's slums who appeared as young Salim in the Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.

The home, more properly described as a shack or a lean-to with a tarpaulin roof and situated in the Garib Nagar slums, was destroyed by bulldozers Thursday in order to make room for a drainage path in preparation for the oncoming monsoon season. Approximately 30 more homes were destroyed along with Ismail's, whose previous home was also destroyed in similar fashion while filming for Slumdog Millionaire was still taking place. Those whose homes were destroyed were given no advance warning. Ismail's mother told the press, "We didn't even get a chance to remove our belongings. We are now left with no roof over our head tonight and the monsoon will begin in a few weeks. We have lived here for 15 years. I don't know what we will do next."

The 10-year-old actor, who had been asleep in the home when the bulldozers came to demolish it, told reporters, "A police officer took a bamboo stick to hit me, and I was frightened." [ read more ]

The report also mentioned that this is the second incident involving the cast of Slumdog Millionaire. The report continues...

Last month, the impoverished father of 9-year-old Slumdog actress Rubina Ali allegedly tried to sell his daughter to a wealthy family. Since then, the Jai Ho Trust, established by the makers of Slumdog Millionaire to provide for their young child stars when filming was completed, has hired a social worker to see that Ali is kept safe.

Boyle already donated the sum of $747,500 to a charity charged with providing support to the large number of Mumbai's slum children, which is a great gesture on the part of the filmmaker. To provide us with additional perspective, that sum is about .20% (that's actually .19805, not 20%) of the film's total worldwide Box Office take.

Perhaps, he could have given more? Yeah, he's not a charity institution, but then again, he's aware of the difficulties of these Indian young actors right? If additional financial support would mean the difference between their chance to experience some comfort or their continued suffering, why not?

What's on your mind? Do you think it's fair for the families of these child actors to demand more financial support from Danny Boyle? What sort of financial support should Boyle provide in order for  these young actors to directly benefit from it? Should he even provide more help or he has given enough already? Let us know what you think!
